Port Tampa Bay Adds 2 Post-Panamax Cranes
[ May 19, 2026 // Gary Burrows ]Port Tampa Bay has taken delivery of two post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes as part of its container terminal expansion, with the units expected to be operational by the end of 2026.
The Liebherr cranes will increase lift capacity and allow the port to handle up to three large container vessels simultaneously. Each unit features a 197-foot outreach and twin-lift capacity of 145,600 pounds, along with upgraded safety and operational systems.
“These cranes are a key part of our Vision 2030 strategy as we continue expanding Port Tampa Bay’s role in supporting the I-4 corridor and the broader West Central Florida region,” said Paul Anderson, president and CEO.
The cranes will be installed at the new Berth 214 wharf, part of a broader expansion that will bring the port’s container terminal to 100 acres, including a third deep-water berth and on-dock rail capability.
Port officials said the investment supports a long-term goal of reaching 1 million twenty-foot equivalent units in annual capacity while improving efficiency and reducing emissions through energy-efficient crane systems.
With the additions, Port Tampa Bay will operate six post-Panamax cranes.
