Wallenius Wilhelmsen Sources Bio-methanol
[ March 20, 2026 // Gary Burrows ]Shipping and logistics company Wallenius Wilhelmsen has signed a two-year agreement with Equinor for the supply of mass-balanced bio-methanol to fuel methanol-capable vessels as the carrier advances plans to reduce emissions from its ocean operations.
Under the agreement, bio-methanol produced in Norway will be delivered to Wallenius Wilhelmsen vessels at the ports of Port of Antwerp and Port of Zeebrugge.
The fuel is certified under the ISCC EU sustainability program and is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by about ninety five percent compared with conventional marine fuels, according to the companies.
Wallenius Wilhelmsen said the deal supports its goal of launching a net-zero end-to-end pilot logistics service for some customers by 2027, relying in part on alternative fuels for its shipping operations.
Executives said long-term supply agreements are critical for expanding production of lower-carbon marine fuels and helping the shipping sector move from pilot projects toward broader commercial use.
Equinor has previously signed bio-methanol supply agreements with Maersk and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings as interest grows in methanol as a potential pathway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in shipping.
