John F. Reinhart, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority (VPA) is a member of the newest class of industry leaders inducted into the International Maritime Hall of Fame.

Reinhart was among five people honored at the 26th annual event, which was held on May 7 in New York City and hosted by the Maritime Association of the Port of New York/New Jersey. The Annual International Maritime Hall of Fame was founded in 1993 to recognize maritime visionaries, who through excellence in their company, organization, or services, best exemplify the qualities of futuristic thinking that will guide the maritime industry in the 21st Century.

Prior to joining the VPA, Reinhart worked for the Maersk organization for 23 years. He served from 2000-2014 as CEO of Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) and a member of the board of directors. During his career with Maersk, he held the positions of president, UMS, senior vice president and regional director. After retiring from Maersk, Reinhart began his tenure with VPA in February 2014.

Under Reinhart’s guidance, The Port of Virginia® will have invested nearly $1.5 billion over 10 years (through 2024) in terminal expansion, dredging and infrastructure spending. In parallel to its expansion, the port has rebranded itself, focused on safety, expanded, educated and diversified its workforce, developed a values-driven corporate culture. Additionally, the port has been profitable and set cargo volume records every year since Reinhart’s arrival in 2014.

“The goal is to build a modern, competitive sustainable port that will be a driving force in the state’s economy for decades to come,” Reinhart says. “It’s very satisfying to have the opportunity to watch people grow, to see the organization mature, to create economic vitality for Virginia and to prepare for a better tomorrow. Working with such a dedicated team that shares this vision and wants to revolutionize America’s first port is a privilege.
