Transito Combines Sea, Inland Freight on Rhine

Dutch chartering company Transito has launched a service combining sea freight and inland shipping under a single contract as low water on the Rhine and port disruptions complicate cargo movements between European seaports and the hinterland.

The Total Freight service covers the ocean or short-sea voyage, port handling, transshipment and onward movement by inland vessel. Transito provides a single price per tonne, contract and invoice and, within an agreed range, assumes the cost of waiting time between the seagoing and inland vessels.

The company said the service is designed in part to address disruptions caused by low river levels, which can restrict inland vessel loading and disrupt schedules. Port congestion, delayed seagoing vessels and documentation problems can further complicate connections between the two transport legs.

“A seagoing vessel waits for an inland vessel, an inland vessel waits at the quay, and the terminal waits for paperwork. Those days end up with the cargo owner,” said Bas Weinberg, management and business development at Transito. “We arrange both vessels ourselves, so if one runs late, we move the other with it.”

Transito is targeting industrial companies and midsized traders moving agribulk, building materials, fertilizers, minerals, recycling materials and project cargo. Typical movements include cargo originating in Scandinavia, the U.K., Poland and northern Spain and destined for the German and Dutch hinterland.

The service is also available for exports moving from the European hinterland to overseas destinations.

Transito, founded in 2002, arranges inland shipping in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France and Switzerland and is also active in dry cargo sea freight.
