ShipServ Awarded ISO 27001 Certification

[ June 9, 2017   //   ]

ShipServ, the world’s leading maritime e-procurement platform, has earned ISO 27001 certification in recognition of the company’s strategy to continually develop its information security practices in line with industry best practice. This certification also compliments the existing controls ShipServ has in place including regular external Penetration Tests, independent reviews of its IT operations, and constant review of potentially valuable security standards such as NIST and CSE.

This full certification acknowledges ShipServ’s ability to deliver trusted data storage and processing services that enable its customers to trade in a secure, reliable, timely, and accurate way. In addition, it shows that ShipServ is well prepared to comply with the EU GDPR which comes into force in May 2018, which places strict regulations on any company that processes personal information of any European citizen.

Implemented in 2013 by the International Organization for Standardization, ISO 27001 is one of the most recognized global standards. It provides organizations with the opportunity to demonstrate excellence and prove best practice in establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an information security management system.

Moreover, the standard provides a framework for setting out policies and procedures for the effective management of confidential and sensitive information, as well as the application of information security controls.

Commenting on this certification, Kim Skaarup, Chief Operating Officer, ShipServ, said: “We are proud to have received this recognition by QMS International. Over the years, ShipServ has taken advanced steps to ensure the safety of our customers’ data through implementing the best systems, robust safeguards, and management procedures.”

“With the continued growth of digitalization, and the increasing challenge of cyber security, gaining ISO 27001 recognition provides our clients with the confidence and assurance that we not only prevent, but are able to defend against potential data system vulnerabilities, and ensure that their data is handled in a safe, reliable, and confidential manner.”

To gain this recognition, ShipServ had to demonstrate that it possesses a comprehensive suite of information security controls, as well as successfully show the effectiveness of the management system to ensure these controls remain efficient and continue to meet the needs of its customers.

To ensure that it maintains the high standards required for all its certifications, ShipServ has also strengthened its core IT operations team with the hire of a highly skilled senior executive, Dominic Aslan, who has extensive experience in cyber security and advising on cyber issues at leading IT security forums and panels. Trained in cyber security emergency response, Dominic most recently built the cyber security capability for one of the oldest commodities brokers in the world.

As a digital business, the processes that have been implemented to protect the ShipServ platform and its customers’ data have been in-built since inception. By achieving the ISO certification, ShipServ has proven its continued commitment to the handling of customer data to the highest possible standards. As the digitalization of commerce continues to grow, and with it cyber security concerns, ShipServ continues to ensure that the right systems, processes, and technology are in place to combat security threats.
