Port of VA processes 341,000 TEUs

[ September 16, 2022   //   ]

The Port of Virginia® continues processing record-setting amounts of cargo having handled nearly 341,000 TEUs in August and in doing so making the month the second most productive month in the port’s history.
August’s TEU total was only 685 units shy of the previous all-time monthly volume mark set in May. The month’s volumes were led by strong exports and imports, which were up 12 percent and 11 percent, respectively; additionally, the port processed more than 80,000 empty export units.
Stephen A. Edwards, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority, is expecting volumes to remain consistent through year’s end, which would put the port on track for a record-setting performance in 2022. On a calendar year basis, the port’s TEU volumes are 10 percent ahead of where they were at this time last year.
“The jump in volume we saw from July [nearly 318,000 TEUs] to August is the result of the new, or reworked, vessel services that are calling The Port of Virginia,” Edwards said. “Since last July [2021] we have brought on 10 new vessel services and five of those have come online since March. Combine that with the fact that we are in our peak season for cargo, as we are moving goods in preparation for the retail season, and the result is a record-setting August.”
