Port Houston Terminals See Double-digit July
[ August 29, 2025 // Gary Burrows ]Port Houston said its public terminals saw double-digit growth, with July container volumes climbed 21 percent over July 2024 to 392,829 twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs.
It was one of Port Houston’s strongest single-month performances, as throughout this year the port has continued to demonstrate strong growth, with year-to-date up 6 percent to 2.56 million TEUs, the fastest pace in the port history.
Loaded imports surged 19 percent in July. Loaded exports, primarily resins in which the port is a market export leader, have steadily grown throughout the year with an 18 percent jump in July. Total loaded containers at Port Houston are up 5 percent so far this year.
General cargo volumes at the public terminals rose 10 percent year-to-date. Steel imports for products used in the oil and gas market, jumped 41 percent in July and 8 percent year-to-date, to 2.7 million short tons. Overall tonnage across the public facilities improved 6 percent to 32.65 million short tons through July.
Port Houston continues to invest to prepare for the expected future cargo volumes. Wharf 7 at Bayport Container Terminal is on track for completion in December, nearly two months early. The new 1,000-foot berth will increase vessel capacity from four to five ships and decrease anchor wait time.
The Houston Ship Channel Expansion, or Project 11, recently received the Environmental Excellence Award from the Western Dredging Association for its use-focused design. Nearly all the engineering-grade dredged material from the Galveston Bay segment (more than 15 million cubic yards) has been repurposed to create 10 acres of bird islands, 276 acres of intertidal marsh, and 324 acres of oyster reefs, while unlocking more than 600 acres of future operations and maintenance
This recent expansion of the Houston Ship Channel now allows up to 17,000 TEU ships to call Bayport Terminal. The final port-led portion of Project 11 dredging is scheduled to be complete later this summer. Additional segments will be led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
