MSC Ownership Passes to Aponte Decendents

[ May 11, 2026   //   ]

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co. said ownership of the business was transferred in the fourth quarter of 2025 from founder Gianluigi Aponte to his children, Diego and Alexa Aponte, marking a generational transition at the world’s largest container carrier.

Diego Aponte, group president, and Alexa Aponte, group chief financial officer, will assume ownership while continuing in their current executive roles. Gianluigi Aponte will remain executive chairman.

The company said the move is intended to ensure continuity of leadership and long-term stability as the Geneva-based group expands across shipping, logistics and terminals.

MSC, founded in 1970, has grown into a global operator with a fleet of about 1,000 vessels and a network spanning 155 countries. The group transports roughly 30 million twenty-foot equivalent units annually and employs about 200,000 people worldwide.

The transition formalizes a succession process already underway, with both successors playing central roles in the company’s growth in recent years.
