FDA to Implement the Food Supplier Verification Program

[ June 13, 2017   //   ]

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will begin implementing their Food Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) on May 30, 2017. The program requires importers to verify that the food items meet U.S. safety standards.

The main requirements of the program include:

  • Identifying the responsible FSVP Importer (either the U.S. owner or consignee).
  • The FSVP identified importer must also verify their suppliers are using prevention based safety practices to ensure the safety of the food as well as having plans in place to identify potential food safety hazards.

The FSVP also has an impact on Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) entries filed after May 30, 2017. As the FSVP identity information will be required at the time of release, customs brokers will need to provide the following information for each line entry of food products in ACE:

  • Importer name
  • Contact information
  • Dun and Bradstreet (DUNS) number

If the information is not readily available at the time of entry, delays may result if the custom broker is required to contact the FSVP importer to secure the required information.
