DHL, LONGi to Expand Europe Solar Deployment

DHL Group and solar technology manufacturer LONGi Solar have signed a memorandum of understanding to expand renewable-energy deployment across DHL’s European facilities while strengthening logistics support for LONGi’s growing solar and battery storage businesses.

The agreement combines the installation of LONGi’s high-efficiency solar technologies on DHL logistics facilities with expanded transportation and supply chain services supporting LONGi’s global operations.

Initially, the companies plan to deploy LONGi’s Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) systems and other distributed solar technologies across DHL sites in Europe. They also will explore solar-plus-storage applications for logistics facilities, renewable hydrogen opportunities and pilot projects to test emerging clean-energy technologies within DHL’s global network.

On the logistics side, DHL will broaden its existing relationship with LONGi beyond express and freight forwarding services to include support for the solar manufacturer’s expanding battery energy storage system business, business-to-consumer logistics and fulfillment services.

“Our collaboration with LONGi reflects how renewable-energy innovation and global logistics excellence can reinforce each other,” Michael Wiedemann, president of the energy sector for DHL Customer Solutions & Innovation, said in a statement. “Alongside deploying LONGi’s solar technologies across our operations, we are supporting their global expansion with integrated services that help bring their solutions to market faster.”

The initiative supports DHL’s Strategy 2030 sustainability program and its goal of becoming the “green logistics of choice.” The company identified new energy as one of eight strategic growth sectors, encompassing solar, wind, electric vehicles, battery storage, charging infrastructure, grid technologies, alternative fuels and hydrogen.

LONGi said the partnership provides an opportunity to scale commercial and industrial solar solutions while supporting DHL’s decarbonization efforts. The companies plan ongoing executive-level reviews to identify additional opportunities for collaboration as the partnership develops.
