deugro, Partners Put New Rotra Vessels to Work

[ September 12, 2025   //   ]

deugro, the freight forwarding and project logistics giant, and partners put to work its newest roll-on/roll-off vessel, the Rotra Futura, when it delivered wind turbine blades from Denmark to the U.S., shortly after beginning operations this past summer.

The project supply vessel, specifically designed to handle larger and heavier offshore wind turbine components, collected the ultra-long 108-meter wind blades at the Port of Aalborg, Denmark for delivery to Portsmouth Marine Terminal in Norfolk, Virginia, in July.

“Witnessing the first loading operation executed so smoothly and precisely – just as we had planned for – is a proud moment for our entire team,” said Dennis Bjørslev Jensen, branch manager, deugro Denmark. “Rotra Futura has performed to our full expectations, reaffirming her vital role in supporting the logistics needs of the offshore wind market,”

deugro and partners Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy A/S and Amasus Offshore B.V., deugro ordered the ro-ro vessels Rotra Futura and Rotra Horizon, in April 2023. Rotra Futura was delivered March 30 at the Zhenjiang Shipyards, in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu, China.

The partners say the latest deliveries promote their ‘Rotra concept’: “To tailor innovative solutions that 100 percent meet the operational and procedural supply-chain challenges in the execution of offshore wind energy projects and deliver tangible long-term benefit.”

The latest Rotra vessels measure 168 meters long, 26 meters wide, with a forward-bridge, which optimizes cargo intake without creating line-of-sight limitations.

The vessels are equipped with a ro-ro ramp, three Liebherr cranes and a unique gantry system, which allows the stowage of blades in three tiers to provide flexibility in cargo composition and loading method, and in mixing different types of components.

With an optimized hull shape, with low-drag coating and Wärtsilä engines, the Rotra ro-ros consume 15 percent less fuel, and feature hybrid propulsion and exhaust gas cleaning meeting IMO Tier 3 standards, with waste heat recovery.

Putting the vessels immediately to work will enable the partners to chip away at a significant backlog of deliveries.

“Our offshore order backlog amounts to more than 16 GW (gigawatts),” said Christian Johansen, global commodity manager for ports and transportation at Siemens Gamesa. “With the development and charter of the two new Rotra vessels, Siemens Gamesa will be well prepared to ensure the safe, timely and cost-effective execution of offshore projects around the world.”

deugro, a pioneer and market leader in project logistics services, and Siemens Gamesa, a pioneer and leading global player in the wind energy sector, has been in a partnership since 2013.
