Descartes Integrates Ocean Data into SAP

Descartes Systems Group has integrated its MacroPoint Advanced Ocean Visibility service with two SAP transportation platforms, allowing shippers to book and track ocean shipments within their existing SAP workflows.

The production integration connects with SAP Business Network Freight Collaboration and SAP Business Network Global Track and Trace through the Descartes Global Logistics Network.

For SAP users, the connection combines carrier booking with container-level tracking of departures, arrivals, loading events, gate movements and other milestones. Elmer Spruijt, Descartes vice president of transportation management, said users no longer need to make bookings manually or search carrier websites and other sources for shipment updates.

Event data can also trigger automated notifications or corrective actions by artificial intelligence agents within a customer’s SAP environment, Spruijt said.

Descartes said the system updates information whenever a shipment milestone occurs, generally making an event available within seconds or minutes. The company described the service as connected with all major ocean carriers and key ports but did not provide carrier and port counts.

The company also did not identify a customer using the production integration or disclose testing results measuring milestone accuracy against carrier-supplied data. Descartes said customers have reported that combining booking, messaging and tracking saves time and improves supply-chain performance and resilience.

Descartes said the service combines carrier, port and other event sources connected through its logistics network to improve data quality and milestone accuracy.

The integration extends an existing connection between the Descartes network and SAP Business Network Freight Collaboration, which supported carrier-booking functions. MacroPoint Advanced Ocean Visibility is available through the SAP Store.
