CSCL Reportedly Ordering 10 Huge Container Ships

Wall Street Journal reporters indicate that China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL), a subsidiary of the China Shipping Group, is reportedly planning to order 10 ultra-large container ships for US $1.5 billion.

The mammoth container ships can carry up to 20,000 intermodal containers each, which would help CSCL fulfill its capacity commitments for its Ocean Three Alliance while also reducing the per-container cost of transport and boosting the line’s bottom line.

The Ocean Three alliance is a three-way agreement between CSCL, France’s CMA CGM, and the UAE’s United Arab Shipping Company.

CSCL is reportedly in talks with shipyards Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group Co. The
