CMA CGM Racine First Vessel to Cross New East Port Said Side Channel

[ March 4, 2016   //   ]

CMA CGM RACINE is the first vessel to cross the New East Port Said side Channel. An opening ceremony celebrating the event on February 24 was attended by Chérif Ismaïl, Egyptian Prime Minister, Saad El-Giuchy, Egyptian Minister of Transport, and Admiral Mohab Mamish, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority.
Thanks to this new side channel, vessels now have a 24-hour access to East Port Said instead of the previous 8-hour access. This brings much more flexibility on berthing windows and less restriction due to the Suez Canal convoy for ships who want to sail directly to the Mediterranean Sea or to berth. The project was concluded in November 2015 and completed within a few months. The new channel is 9km long, 250m width and 18m depth. Vessels up to 16.6m draft are able to cross it.
CMA CGM has been present in Egypt with its own agency since 1998. Ten different lines call Egypt and connect the country to the world. Thanks to calls in the CMA CGM hubs, transshipment connections are offered towards worldwide markets. The Group’s network gathers 5 agencies and employs more than 200 persons through the country.
