CCM Updates to Improve Intermodal Efficiency
[ April 24, 2026 // Gary Burrows ]Consolidated Chassis Management said it is expanding fleet modernization and interoperable chassis pool initiatives to help motor carriers reduce costs and mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices across the intermodal sector.
The company’s latest push centers on enhancements to the South Atlantic Chassis Pool, or SACP, where an 18-month modernization program has introduced newer equipment and operational efficiencies aimed at lowering fuel consumption and improving asset utilization.
CEO Paul Nazzaro said the strategy is designed to maintain carrier profitability amid inflationary pressures on diesel, steel and other inputs. “CCM is dedicated to delivering cost-conscious, customer-focused solutions that provide unmatched value.”
A key component is the shift to a younger chassis fleet, with units averaging about three years old, equipped with radial tires, LED lighting and upgraded braking systems. The company said radial tires alone can reduce rolling resistance and cut fuel consumption by an estimated 7 percent to 10 percent.
The South Atlantic pool, which spans major port and inland hubs including Savannah, Charleston and Jacksonville, is structured as a single-provider model designed to improve chassis availability and reduce inefficiencies tied to fragmented equipment ownership.
CCM said centralized chassis pools allow motor carriers to reduce “deadhead” miles, or non-revenue-generating trips to pick up or return equipment, while also lowering idle time costs by enabling pay-per-use access instead of long-term leasing.
Industry analysts have pointed to chassis availability and cost as persistent friction points in U.S. intermodal operations, particularly during periods of supply chain disruption. CCM’s broader upgrade program, which includes refurbishing tens of thousands of chassis units through 2027, is aimed at improving reliability and reducing maintenance burdens for carriers.
The company said combining modernized equipment with pooled provisioning can deliver both operational and environmental benefits, including reduced fuel burn and lower emissions intensity.
As fuel costs remain volatile and freight demand patterns shift, CCM said it will continue to invest in scalable pool models and equipment upgrades to support motor carriers navigating an increasingly complex logistics environment.
