Brazil Shipbuilding Revival Gains Momentum

[ May 19, 2026   //   ]

Brazil’s shipbuilding sector continues to show signs of revival following the delivery of 13 newly built mineral barges from Bahia aboard the heavy-lift vessel AAL Antwerp, marking another step in a broader industrial recovery tied to mining logistics and inland waterway transport across South America.

The barges, each with a capacity of about 2,900 tonnes, were constructed at the Enseada Shipyard in Maragogipe, Bahia, for LHG Mining and will operate along the Paraguay–Paraná waterway transporting iron ore from Mato Grosso do Sul to the company’s export terminal in Nueva Palmira, Uruguay.

The shipment was handled by AAL Shipping using its 32,000-dwt Super B-Class vessel AAL Antwerp. It follows an earlier shipment completed in November 2025 aboard AAL Hamburg.

The program is being viewed as another positive sign for Brazil’s shipbuilding industry, which has struggled for much of the past decade amid economic turbulence and declining offshore investment.

Following a return to full operations in 2025, Enseada Shipyard has re-established itself as one of Brazil’s major industrial shipbuilding facilities. The current program is expected to generate about 600 direct jobs and as many as 900 indirect jobs in Bahia. About 80 barges are planned under the broader construction initiative.

Pablo Zengarini, international logistics specialist at LHG Mining, said the project represents a major logistics investment requiring coordination across shipyard production, river transport systems and ocean shipping.

“The coordination required across shipyard operations, river logistics on the Paraguay–Paraná waterway and ocean transport to Nueva Palmira is substantial,” Zengarini said.

The Paraguay-Paraná waterway is one of South America’s most important inland trade corridors, linking agricultural and mineral-producing regions in Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina with Atlantic export markets.

Eugene Nutovych, senior chartering manager at AAL Americas, said the sailings reflect growing demand for specialized heavy-lift logistics tied to industrial and mining expansion projects in South America.
