Agentic AI Moves into Logistics Operations, DHL

Artificial intelligence is beginning to move beyond analyzing logistics operations toward systems capable of independently planning and acting across supply chains, according to DHL’s latest assessment of technologies expected to reshape the industry.

The DHL Logistics Trend Radar 8.0 identifies Agentic AI as one of the highest-impact emerging technologies, with potential applications ranging from anticipating inventory shortages and rerouting freight around disruptions to dynamically adjusting transportation capacity.

Agentic AI is one of four new trends added to the eighth edition of DHL’s biennial report, along with AI Commerce, Compute Economy and Humanoids. The radar evaluates technological, business and social developments according to their potential impact on logistics and expected adoption over the next decade.

“Until now, AI has helped people perform tasks more efficiently. The next chapter is about action,” said Klaus Dohrmann, vice president of innovation and trend research, DHL Customer Solutions & Innovation.

DHL said Agentic AI differs from earlier systems primarily designed to respond to prompts or analyze information because it can plan, make decisions and act autonomously toward defined objectives. AI Analytics, meanwhile, is increasingly being used to identify patterns, anticipate disruptions and forecast outcomes.

The report also places increased emphasis on the effect of automation on the logistics workforce. DHL identifies wearable sensors, remote operations, collaborative robotics and AI-powered workplace assistants as technologies expected to reduce repetitive work and shift employees toward problem-solving, customer service and operational oversight. It said the changes could reshape hundreds of frontline, technical and knowledge-based roles.

As AI assumes more operational responsibility, DHL said governance is becoming increasingly important. AI Ethics and Cybersecurity 2.0 are included among the radar’s trends as companies consider safeguards and human oversight for AI used in demand forecasting, inventory planning and transportation decisions.

Sustainability remains another major component of the radar, including decarbonization, sustainable fuels, circularity and heavy- and light-vehicle electrification.

The Logistics Trend Radar is developed by DHL Customer Solutions & Innovation with business, technology and academic participants and examines trends DHL expects could affect logistics, supply chains and global trade during the next decade.
