Project Cargo Demand Lifts Toepfer MPP indexes
[ October 16, 2026 // Gary Burrows ]Strong demand for multipurpose vessels capable of carrying project cargo pushed Toepfer Transport’s principal charter indexes higher in October, with reported fixtures in some cases exceeding the benchmarks.
The monthly Toepfer Multipurpose Index increased 1.49 percent to US$13,023 per day. The TMI-500, which tracks larger multipurpose and heavy-lift tonnage, rose 0.64 percent to US$17,782 per day.
Toepfer said demand for multipurpose tonnage remains high and continues to increase, particularly for vessels equipped to handle project cargo. Actual fixtures above the published index levels indicate that some cargo requirements are commanding premiums over the broader market benchmark.
Strength also is extending into vessel values. Secondhand prices continue rising as prospective buyers encounter limited availability, with owners reluctant to sell vessels generating profitable charter returns.
Newbuilding activity also is increasing, according to the Hamburg shipbroker. Owners considering multipurpose vessel orders face higher prices and competition for shipyard capacity from other shipping sectors.
The combination is creating pressure across chartering, vessel sales and new construction. Owners seeking newbuilding slots may need to move quickly as demand from competing vessel segments affects negotiations and yard availability.
Toepfer’s six-month index measure increased 1.43 percent, while its 12-month measure rose 2.72 percent.
FBJNA has requested additional detail about the cargo sectors driving demand, the nature of above-index fixtures and Toepfer’s outlook for charter rates and vessel availability.
