AI Stokes Cyberattacks, Expands Attack Surface

[ October 9, 2026   //   ]

Booz Allen Hamilton is warning that artificial intelligence is accelerating cyberattacks while allowing intruders to increasingly exploit legitimate identities, software and business processes to avoid detection.

Automated tools can generate working exploit code in as little as five minutes, while newly disclosed vulnerabilities can be weaponized within 24 hours, according to Booz Allen. Some AI-enabled systems can perform as much as 90 percent of an offensive cyber workflow.

Andrew Carr, managing director of global incident response, said AI can compress the research needed for targeted social-engineering attacks from weeks to minutes. Once credentials are compromised, attackers can operate through internal email, remote IT tools and other trusted systems, making malicious activity harder to distinguish from legitimate employee behavior.

Companies’ own AI applications are also becoming potential targets. Booz Allen recommends zero-trust controls, continuous monitoring and security testing as organizations connect AI assistants and agents to corporate data and applications.
