Freeport Channel Milestone Expands Ship Access
[ August 7, 2026 // Gary Burrows ]Port Freeport and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have completed another major phase of the Freeport Harbor Channel Improvement Project, expanding vessel access and navigation capability at one of the nation’s busiest energy and industrial ports.
Officials marked the milestone during a July 28 ribbon-cutting ceremony recognizing completion of channel improvements that deepen and partially widen portions of the federal navigation channel, enhance the upper turning basin and ease the lower channel bend.
The improvements are designed to accommodate larger vessels, reduce navigation constraints and improve the movement of energy products, vehicles, containers, chemicals, agricultural commodities, heavy equipment and other cargo through the Texas Gulf Coast gateway.
“This project demonstrates what the Army Corps of Engineers excels at — converting public investment and strong partnerships into navigation capability that delivers lasting national value,” said Brig. Gen. George H. Walter, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Southwestern Division.
Port Freeport, which ranks 17th nationally by commercial tonnage, said the project strengthens its ability to handle larger vessels while improving operating flexibility and safety.
Executive Director and CEO Phyllis Saathoff said the improvements position the port to expand cargo opportunities and strengthen domestic supply chains.
“As the deepest port on the Gulf of America, Port Freeport is better positioned to serve our customers, strengthen America’s supply chains and create new opportunities that will benefit Texas and the nation,” Saathoff said.
The channel improvement project was authorized under the Water Resources Reform and Development Act of 2014, with Port Freeport serving as the non-federal sponsor.
The latest milestone includes completion of Reach 3 to a depth of 51 feet and Reach 4 to 26 feet. Work remains on the project’s outer bar, jetty and main channel reaches, including deepening portions of the entrance channel to 58 feet and the main channel to 56 feet.
According to the Corps, the completed project will improve vessel maneuverability through a wider channel, expanded turning basin and an improved lower channel bend, increasing cargo-carrying capability while reducing navigation constraints.
Port Freeport handles a diverse mix of energy, automotive, container, chemical, agricultural and industrial cargoes and serves as a key gateway for Texas manufacturing and exports.
