Rhenus Makes Austria to US Multimodal Move
[ March 25, 2026 // Gary Burrows ]Rhenus Group executed a complex multimodal transport of industrial equipment from Austria to the U.S., supporting the build-out of a major manufacturing facility and highlighting the growing role of inland waterways in project logistics.
The move comprised about 2,840 cubic meters of breakbulk cargo packed in 40 oversized crates, along with a dozen 40-foot containers. The shipment combined road, inland waterway and ocean transport under a single end-to-end plan, with tight delivery windows and high-value cargo requiring strict coordination across regions.
Pre-carriage was handled by Rhenus’ overland division to the inland hub at Port of Krems, a trimodal facility on the Danube River linking road, rail and barge services. From there, cargo moved by inland vessel to Port of Antwerp for transshipment onto an ocean service bound for Port of Norfolk, before final delivery to a project site in North Carolina.
Rhenus’ project logistics unit oversaw the ocean leg and U.S. on-carriage, while its Austrian project division acted as the central coordination hub, aligning milestones and managing customer communication across all legs.
The operator said the use of inland waterways improved efficiency and reduced environmental impact compared with an all-road solution, while also easing congestion on key European corridors.
The shipment underscores continued demand for integrated multimodal solutions in heavy lift and project cargo, particularly for transatlantic industrial developments requiring synchronized execution across inland, port and ocean networks.
