Globalplex Dock Access Bridge Unveiled
[ March 5, 2026 // Gary Burrows ]The Port of South Louisiana on Feb. 25 marked the ribbon cutting of the Globalplex Dock Access Bridge, a publicly funded infrastructure project designed to improve cargo reliability, efficiency and heavy-load capacity at its Globalplex facility.
The bridge was financed through the Federal Maritime Administration and Louisiana’s Capital Outlay program. Port officials said the project creates a second connection between Globalplex’s main facility and its primary dock on the Mississippi River, ensuring continuous access and reducing the risk of operational disruptions.
Previously, the dock depended on a single access bridge. If that span became unavailable, vessel calls had to be diverted to other ports. The addition of a second bridge eliminates that vulnerability and strengthens the terminal’s ability to manage modern freight volumes, officials said.
Executive Director Julia Fisher-Cormier called the project a long-term investment in reliability, resilience and regional economic growth. She said the new span enhances the port’s ability to serve current and future customers while improving safety and cargo flow.
Engineered to support 1,000 pounds per square foot, the bridge can accommodate fully loaded tractor-trailers as well as heavy and oversized equipment. The upgraded layout also enables a circular truck traffic pattern, reducing congestion and speeding loading and unloading operations.
Founded in 1960, the Port of South Louisiana spans 54 miles along the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. It is the largest port in the state and ranks among the busiest in the Western Hemisphere by tonnage, serving major grain and energy export markets.
