July Imports Surge to 2.62M TEUs, Descartes
[ August 22, 2025 // Gary Burrows ]Descartes’ August Global Shipping Report reported that July imports, at 2.62 million twenty-foot equivalent units, surged 18 percent over June and 2.6 percent higher year-over-year
The import total, according to Descartes Datamyne, its global trade intelligence platform, was just 555 TEUs from the monthly record.
Imports from China surged 44.4 percent month-over-month to 923,000 TEUs, raising its share of total U.S. imports to 35.2 percent, up from 28.8 percent in June, as importers front-loaded ahead of the Oct. 15 expiration of the U.S.-China tariff truce.
West Coast ports held the lead for a second straight month at 45.8 percent market share, while Houston posted a 122 percent jump in China-origin volumes, and signaling flexibility in transpacific routing, Descartes said.
As far as other top origins, these ports posted strong month-over-month growth: Hong Kong, +47.8 percent; South Korea, +16.8 percent; India, +13.6 percent; and Thailand, +13.1 percent. Germany was the only top-10 origin to decline (-0.6 percent), according to Descartes Datamyne.
The surge comes ahead of the Aug. 29 repeal of the de minimis exemption, the Oct. 15 U.S.-China tariff truce expiration, and recent reciprocal tariffs on more than 60 countries, all against a backdrop of Red Sea disruptions and rising geopolitical risk.
