[ September 5, 2017   //   ]

The Port of Virginia’s® new director of ocean carrier sales is Brian Kobza, who comes to the position with extensive experience in transportation industry, specifically rail, ports and shipping.

“Brian is very diverse in terms of his industry experience,” said Thomas D. Capozzi, chief sales officer. “That understanding of the industry will allow him to step-in and immediately begin contributing.

“The Port of Virginia handles a higher percentage of rail business than any other port on the East Coast and it is a significant part of our growth strategy. Brian’s experience working for one of the Class-1 railroads will be particularly helpful as we develop our rail-growth strategies. He’ll be a solid addition to the team and integral to marketing a growing Port of Virginia to the world’s ocean carriers.”

Kobza’s last position was senior international account manager with CSX  Transportation. His work experience also includes time spent with the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, Hyundai Merchant Marine, Maersk Equipment Service Co., and APM Terminals in Elizabeth, N.J. He received a bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

In the spring, the port’s sales team underwent some planned changes with Joe O’Brien having been promoted to vice president of ocean carrier sales following the retirement of a long-time colleague, Frank Naughton. In parallel, a search for candidates to fill the director of ocean carrier sales was undertaken; Kobza begins Sept. 5.
