Port Authority Receives OEDA’s Best Project Award

[ October 25, 2016   //   ]

The Ohio Economic Development Association (OEDA) presented the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority with the Best Project Award for The Dana Project at Overland Industrial Park at its 2016 Annual Summit held October 19-21 in Columbus, Ohio. The Ohio Economic Development Association’s annual excellence awards program recognizes economic and workforce development achievements throughout Ohio. The Best Project category recognizes outstanding and innovative projects in economic and business development that retain or generate jobs and investment.

The Port Authority, in conjunction with public and private partners, was successful in obtaining a commitment from Dana Holding Corp. to open a new high-tech axle manufacturing facility at Overland Industrial Park, making Dana the first tenant on the recently redeveloped site. Dana plans to lease an existing 100,000 sq. ft. facility on the property, and the Port Authority and NAI Harmon Group will work to expand the building to nearly 300,000 sq. ft. Dana will invest approximately $70 million in machinery and equipment into the facility, and will employ 300 people at the site.

This project is unique due to strong partnerships between economic development entities, all of which brought resources to the table to ensure the success of the project. Additionally, public entities played a role that is traditionally played by private sector developers, and the calculated risk resulted in Dana’s commitment to the site.

Since the Port Authority acquired the former Jeep Property in 2010, it has invested approximately $15 million to redevelop the site making it attractive to many potential end users. Upgrades to the site include remediation, site grading, installation of lighting, the construction of a 100,000 sq. ft. warehouse, and the completion of a new roadway located off Central Avenue, which will serve as the main entrance into the site until phase two of the I-75 interchange project is complete. The property is served by Class I rail, offers easy access to the interstate system, and is seen by as many as 125,000 passing motorists each day.
